Here’s a brief history of our company:
It all started with a three-month trip driving around Europe upon graduation from Ohio State University. Dash Travel started in the fall of 1959 on 42nd Street in New York City. In 1964, we opened in Mt. Vernon and later had branches in both Yonkers and White Plains. Our sole location in now at 280 NE 2nd Avenue, Cottage 2, a walk-in office, in downtown Delray Beach, Florida.
In the ’60s, we were involved heavily with the entertainment business. We handled travel arrangements for the Rolling Stones and many other well-known stars, including local travel for Denzel Washington. We leased a hotel in Montreal for Expo 67 and handled reservations for individuals and groups from other travel agents.
In the ’70s, we broadened our base in the group market and provided both local and long-distance arrangements for senior and youth groups. When the Atlantic City casinos started, we moved as many as 20,000 people a year from Westchester and New York by bus to Atlantic City. We also ran a “Disco Train” from New York to Montreal, and we were an Amtrak “Golden Spike” agency.
We became involved in a number of travel industry organizations. Joel was a founding member of the Association of Westchester Travel Agents (AWTA) and served on the Board of Directors for over 30 years, and four terms as president. He was also on the founding committee of GIANTS, now “Ensemble”, a national travel cooperative with over 1,000 agencies. In addition, Joel served on the national board of the Association of Retail Agents (ARTA) and was an ASTA member as well as a Rotarian. He was elected by fellow travel agents as “Travel Agent of the Year” by Travelage Magazine. In Florida, Joel served as a director of the Gold Coast Travel Industry Association.
Joel Dash has served on a number of government and tourist advisory boards, as well as airline and cruise company boards. He has had the opportunity to meet personally and dine with eight heads of countries, including Papa Doc Duvalier in his palace. Joel has taught travel courses for over 40 years in the adult education programs in Mt. Vernon and White Plains, NY. He continues to teach travel courses in Boca Raton and Delray Beach, FL. Additionally, Joel was travel editor of “TV Facts Magazine”, had a weekly newspaper column, and has been an ongoing contributing editor for many other publications. Over the years, Joel has owned a motorcoach, a genuine English double-decker bus, and a stagecoach used for Dash Tours customers and advertising promotions.
